Why Volunteers Matter — And Why I Show Up

Last week, I attended the Volunteer Appreciation event hosted by the City of Burnaby — not as a candidate, but as a volunteer.
For years, I’ve volunteered my time in Burnaby because that’s how strong communities actually work. Not through speeches. Not through promises. Through people showing up, consistently, and doing the work that doesn’t make headlines.
Volunteers are the quiet backbone of this city. They’re the ones helping neighbours, supporting programs, filling gaps, and making sure things keep moving when resources are tight. Most don’t ask for recognition — and that’s exactly why they deserve it.
Being in a room full of volunteers reminded me of something important: Burnaby isn’t powered by politics. It’s powered by people who care enough to give their time.
That’s the version of public service I believe in.Hands-on. Practical. No spotlight required.
If I’m asking for your trust, it’s because I’ve already been doing the work — long before putting my name forward.
Thank you to everyone who volunteers in Burnaby. You’re the reason this city works as well as it does.

Community doesn’t happen by accident. It happens because people show up.
